Paddock boots with half chaps or riding boots: which is better?
Both are a good choice, paddock boots with half chaps are above all more flexible and versatile. According to the German Equestrian Federation (FN), beginners can easily start with paddock boots and half chaps, and many show jumpers value the combination because of the greater freedom of movement in the ankle.
Riding boots made in one piece, on the other hand, offer a closed, uniform leg, which looks more classic.
Am I allowed to compete in paddock boots and half chaps?
Yes, in levels E to S half chaps are permitted if they are the same colour and close fitting. Together with the paddock boots they must visually correspond to riding boots made in one piece.
At competitions only dark colours are permitted for boots and half chaps. If you wear spurs with paddock boots and half chaps, take particular care that the spurs are correctly fastened. The full rules are set out in the FN equipment rules that accompany the German competition rules (LPO).
What should I look out for when buying riding paddock boots?
The important features are a small heel, a continuous sole and a leg that reaches at least above the ankle. The heel prevents the foot from sliding through the stirrup, which the German Equestrian Federation (FN) explicitly names as a safety feature.
For cross-country riding the FN recommends boots or paddock boots that prevent slipping through. Try on paddock boots with the socks you wear for riding and check whether the heel is well supported when you walk.
How do I care for smooth leather paddock boots?
Remove dirt after riding with a damp cloth and use a special leather cleaner for a thorough clean. Household cleaners can dry out and damage the leather.
Apply care products in small circular movements and allow them to be fully absorbed. With daily use, more thorough care about once a week is recommended. Store the boots in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place and never dry wet leather on the radiator.
