How do I find the right bit size for my horse?
The bit width fits if, on a loose ring snaffle without any contact on the reins, there is no more than 0.5 cm of space between the corners of the mouth and the ring on both sides. For bits with fixed cheeks Sprenger recommends choosing one size smaller.
For the thickness, use the two-finger test: if you feel pressure on both fingers where the bit lies, Sprenger recommends 14–16 mm, if you feel hardly any pressure 16–18 mm. During our bit fitting service with Julia Lühr, you can try test bits directly on your horse.
How tight can the noseband be?
You should be able to place two upright fingers between noseband and bridge of the nose. Measure at the top on the nasal bone, not at the side, because the soft tissue there is misleading.
A cavesson noseband sits about two fingers below the cheekbone. Leaving it off altogether is not a solution: in a study of 3,000 competition horses, horses without a noseband had injuries at the corners of the mouth more often than horses with a loosely fastened strap.
How do I fasten the throatlatch and browband?
The throatlatch is correctly fastened when a fist fits between the strap and the jowl. This allows the horse to come on the bit and breathe freely.
The browband should prevent the headpiece from slipping without pressing on the ears. Fasten the cheekpieces to the same length on both sides so that the bit lies straight in the mouth.
How high should the bit sit in the mouth?
The bit is in the correct position when one or two small wrinkles form at the corners of the mouth. Make sure that both sides are buckled to the same height.
In addition, the ring of a loose ring snaffle must be able to move freely and must not pinch the corner of the mouth. Check the fit again after every adjustment.
