How often should I clean my saddle and bridle?
With normal use, cleaning about once a week is usually enough. Heavily sweaty leather tack should be cleaned more often. Wipe the leather with a damp sponge and a little saddle soap.
From time to time, take the bridle completely apart. This allows you to reach the areas under buckles and in loops where dirt collects and the leather can become hard under pressure.
Which care product do I need for what?
For cleaning, use leather soap that dissolves in water and is applied with a sponge or cloth. Leather oil and leather cream are intended for heavily used, dry or older leather. A leather balsam gives lighter care and can be used more often.
Oil penetrates deep into the leather and softens the fibres. Grease keeps the leather supple and is applied occasionally after cleaning. For everyday use there is cleaning foam that cleans and conditions at the same time.
Can you over-condition leather?
Yes, too much oil or grease damages the leather. Over-conditioned leather becomes sticky and unpleasant, the fibres swell, and in the long term it can even tear.
Only apply grease when the leather looks dry, and apply care products thinly. Light products that do not oversaturate the leather are suitable for daily care. Save intensive care for heavily used items.
What helps against mould on leather tack?
The most important thing is cool and dry storage because mould develops mainly in high humidity, for example in tack rooms or trailers. Moisture can be reduced with rice or cat litter used as moisture absorbers.
If mould is already present, remove it with a gentle leather cleaner and repeat the treatment daily until nothing more is visible. Afterwards the leather needs thorough care. Regularly conditioned leather that is stored dry is far less likely to go mouldy.
