How many treats can my horse have?
Given in a targeted way as a reward, treats hardly count in terms of calories. They only become a problem if they are fed by the bucket.
If you only reward occasionally, you do not need to think too much about the ingredients. If, however, you work with treats frequently in training, you should pay closer attention to sugar, starch and additives. Ideally, a treat will also be suitable as a supplement to the normal ration.
What should I look for in the ingredients?
Look at the label on the packet, especially at the sugar content. Grain-free does not automatically mean low in sugar. If apple pomace or beet pulp are high up in the list of ingredients, the sugar content can still be high.
Molasses is a strain on metabolically sensitive horses and on the teeth. Essential oils can irritate the gastric mucosa, and horses cannot utilise garlic well. Some horses also do not tolerate added herbs.
Which treats are suitable for EMS or a risk of laminitis?
In Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), treats containing sugar and starch are taboo, including carrots and apples. These horses react sensitively to easily digestible carbohydrates and there is a risk of laminitis.
Grain-free options made from linseed meal, oilseeds or pressed hay are more suitable. The entire ration should be as low in starch and sugar as possible in EMS. Always discuss feeding in metabolic disorders with your vet.
Are treats with vitamins or made from hay a good idea?
Experts tend to advise against treats with added vitamins and minerals, because the quantity varies depending on the reward and can therefore hardly be dosed. Vitamins and minerals are better supplied through a targeted mineral feed.
Pressed hay treats on the other hand are a good low-sugar choice. However, do a swelling test beforehand with warm water. If they swell up a lot, there is a risk of choke if they are fed dry.
