Do I need a short girth or a long girth?
That depends on the saddle: dressage saddles with long girth straps need a short girth (dressage girth), jumping and eventing saddles with short straps need a long girth. Short girths are usually 40–90 cm long, long girths about 90–150 cm.
With a long girth the buckles lie under the saddle flap instead of on the belly. Because the strongest pressure occurs in the buckle area, long girths are considered particularly horse friendly. A short girth, on the other hand, brings the rider’s leg closer to the horse.
How do I measure the correct girth length?
For a short girth measure on the tacked-up horse from the lower edge of one saddle flap under the belly to the lower edge of the other and subtract 30 cm. Use the line of the existing girth as a guide.
The girth fits correctly when the buckles lie about 4–10 cm below the saddle pad but still above the elbow. If a short girth is too short it can rub the elbow and restrict the length of stride.
Which girth shape is suitable for sensitive horses?
For sensitive horses, anatomically shaped girths with cut-outs at the elbow and pressure-distributing materials such as sheepskin are suitable. Alternatives to sheepskin are towelling, hollow-fibre pile or synthetic fleece.
Asymmetrical girths are cut back on only one side and suit horses with little girth area, while moon girths create more elbow freedom through their half-moon shape. The girth should lie at the narrowest part of the belly, about a hand’s breadth behind the front leg.
How do I tighten the girth correctly?
First tighten the back girth strap and then the front one, and tighten the girth in stages: once before mounting and again after five to ten minutes of riding. This allows your horse to get used to the girth.
Clean leather girths after riding on both sides with saddle soap and then treat them with leather balm. Open any hook-and-loop fastenings so that no soap residue can build up and leave the girth to dry unfastened.
