What is a saddle cover used for?

A saddle cover protects the saddle from dust in the tack room, and water-repellent versions also protect it from damp and light rain. This keeps the leather cleaner and means it needs thorough cleaning less often.

However, the cover does not replace correct storage: saddles need a dry, well ventilated place. Mould quickly forms in damp tack rooms and attacks the leather.

What should you do if mould forms on the saddle?

If you have mould, you first need to deal with the cause, in other words damp and poor ventilation. Once mould has become established, the spores ensure it will quickly form again, even at lower humidity.

Clean the leather thoroughly with saddle soap, then treat it with leather balm.

Is a crupper useful if the saddle slips forwards?

A crupper is now considered controversial because it constantly pulls on the dock and puts pressure on the sensitive sacroiliac area. The tail can no longer swing freely and this can lead to tension in the back.

If the saddle slips, this is often a sign of a back that is difficult to fit. Saddlers now offer solutions without a crupper for almost every back shape, so it is worth having the saddle fit checked by a specialist.

Why does sweat damage saddle leather?

Sweat removes moisture from the leather and makes it dry and brittle over time. You should therefore clean the saddle regularly from above and below. One manufacturer recommends at least every five days.

After cleaning with saddle soap, apply leather balm so that the leather stays supple. Do not overdo it though, because too much grease causes the fibres to swell.
