Full seat, knee patch or grip? Which riding breeches suit you
Full seat, knee patch or silicone grip: which one suits your discipline and how you like your seat to feel, and why the fit is what matters in the end.
Good riding breeches are the direct connection between you and the saddle. One of the most common questions is therefore: full seat, knee patch or grip? There is no such thing as the one perfect pair of riding breeches. Which option is right depends on your discipline, experience and how you like your seat to feel.
What is the difference between grip area and grip material?
Full seat and knee patch describe where the grip is placed, while leather, synthetic leather or silicone grip describe what it is made of. Both can be combined: there are grip riding breeches with a full seat as well as with a knee patch. If you know this distinction, it is easier to find your way around the range.
Who are full-seat riding breeches suitable for?
Riding breeches with a full seat are particularly suitable for dressage and for anyone who does a lot of sitting trot and wants a quiet, deep seat. The seat panel runs from the seat over the inside of the thighs to the knee or beyond. The large contact area provides plenty of contact with the saddle. Many beginner riders who are still working on the stability of their seat also like to choose this option.
The continuous seat panel also protects the fabric of the breeches from friction. In return it offers slightly less freedom of movement, and if you ride a lot in a light seat, you may sometimes find the large gripping area restricting.
When are knee-patch riding breeches the better choice?
Riding breeches with a knee patch are the classic choice in show jumping because they provide grip at the knee and allow a lot of freedom of movement. The grip is only on the inside of the knees, sometimes extending to the lower thigh. In a light seat with shorter stirrups you need less contact with the whole thigh and it is easier to rise out of the saddle. In eventing, cross-country and leisure riding, a knee patch is often sufficient as well.
What are the advantages of silicone grip compared with leather patches?
Silicone grip adheres very well to the saddle while keeping the fabric of the breeches elastic and breathable. Instead of a continuous layer of material, silicone dots, stripes or patterns are applied directly to the fabric. Air can circulate between the patterns. Many novice riders appreciate the added feeling of security.
There are two things you should know: silicone can wear over time and through frequent washing. Gentle care according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually cool and without fabric softener, extends its lifespan. Some riders also find the strong grip too much at first. Whether silicone grip or classic patches suit you better is therefore also a matter of how you like your seat to feel.
Are synthetic leather patches still a good option today?
Yes, classic synthetic leather patches are robust and durable and mould well to your leg over time. Real leather used to be more common, whereas today synthetic leather predominates, which is generally easy to care for. Where the patches are, however, such breeches are less breathable than breeches with a grip pattern.
Which type of grip suits which discipline?
As a rough guide: full seat for dressage, knee patch for show jumping, grip and knee patch for cross-country and leisure riding, depending on how much hold you want.
| Type of grip | Suitable for | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Full seat | Dressage, sitting trot, seat training | large contact area, quiet seat, protects the fabric, slightly less freedom of movement |
| Knee patch | Show jumping, eventing, cross-country, leisure riding | grip at the knee, a lot of freedom of movement, makes a light seat easier |
| Silicone grip | all disciplines, riders who want a lot of grip | very non-slip, elastic and air-permeable, available as full seat or knee patch, may diminish over time |
| Synthetic leather patches | frequent riders, long hacks | robust, durable, moulds to the leg, less breathable where the patches are |
In the end, what counts is what you feel comfortable in. Experienced riders often decide based on feel and discipline, while novice riders often benefit from the extra grip of a full seat or silicone grip.
Why should I try on riding breeches before buying?
Because sizes and cuts vary between manufacturers, only trying them on will show whether a pair of riding breeches really fits. A size that fits you in one brand may be too tight or too loose in another. This is why you should try different models and also different waist heights. It is only when you move around that it becomes clear whether the waistband, leg length and grip are in the right place.
