What is the difference between Passier leather stirrup leathers and Velvet Touch?
The classic Passier stirrup leathers are made from pre-stretched European cowhide that is designed to keep its length. They are double hand-stitched and are available in widths of 25 and 29 mm. The Velvet Touch is made from particularly soft leather and has an integrated nylon core, which according to Passier prevents stretching even under heavy use.
The Velvet Touch is 25 mm wide and has 25 holes with a very small spacing, which allows you to adjust the stirrup length precisely. Both models have curved stainless steel buckles that lie flat against the saddle. At Ahrens Reitsport you will find the leather strap in Havanna, London and Black, and the Velvet Touch with nylon in Havanna and Black.

What is a Mono stirrup leather from Passier?
A mono stirrup leather lies in a single layer instead of a double layer. It is attached directly to the stirrup bar on the saddle, which means it does not create a double thickness in the length. According to Passier you will not feel it under the saddle flap or under your thigh.
The Mono Velvet Touch is 25 mm wide, has a nylon core to prevent stretching and stainless steel buckles with leather covers. Seven closely spaced holes are used for adjustment, with an additional hole for running up the stirrups. Because it lies in a single layer, it is significantly shorter than a classic strap and Passier offers it in lengths from 50 to 80 cm. We stock it in Black.

What length do I need in Passier stirrup leathers?
That depends mainly on the type of stirrup leather. Passier offers classic, double-layer leathers in lengths from 130 to 170 cm and the Velvet Touch from 110 to 170 cm. Mono leathers lie in a single layer and are therefore only 50 to 80 cm long. This means the length specifications of the two types are not directly comparable.
If you are happy with your current leathers, measure their total length and choose a similar size. Thanks to the many closely spaced holes on the Velvet Touch you can make fine adjustments within one length. At Ahrens Reitsport we stock Passier leathers between 120 and 170 cm as well as mono leathers in 60, 65 and 70 cm.

How do I care for leather stirrup leathers?
Clean the leathers regularly with saddle soap, then care for the leather with a leather balm. Passier describes its saddle soap as a mild cleaner with a very low solvent content that is suitable for all types of leather and cleans the pores thoroughly.
According to Passier the leather balm keeps the leather supple and protects it from penetrating moisture, which significantly extends the service life of saddlery. Only apply the balm once the leather is clean. If you have any questions about leather care, our team in our shop in Tangstedt will be happy to advise you.
