Which Likit holder do I need for 650 g and 250 g?

The crucial factor is the size of the treat: A 650 g Likit goes into the Likit Holder, which is fitted hanging freely in the stable and moves while the horse licks it. The small 250 g Little Likits are designed for the Tongue Twister, Boredom Breaker and Boredom Buster.

The Boredom Breaker combines both and takes one large Likit as well as one or two Little Likits. According to the manufacturer, the Holder is the easiest way to get started, while food-motivated horses get more of a challenge from the Boredom Breaker or Boredom Buster.

How much Likit can a horse have per day?

Likit recommends a maximum of 300 g per day, which corresponds to one Little Likit or half a large Likit. How much is suitable in each individual case depends, according to the manufacturer, on the horse’s feed ration, size, breed and age.

To put this into context, Likit calculates that a 500 kg horse takes in around 2 kg of sugar a day when grazing, and that the recommended maximum daily amount of Likit corresponds to roughly two hours of turnout on grass. Even so, you should keep an eye on how quickly your horse uses up its Likit.

What is Likit made of and is it suitable for laminitis?

Likits consist mainly of glucose and dextrose, with natural colourings, flavourings and potassium sorbate added as a preservative. According to the manufacturer, the sugar content averages 80 per cent, and they are produced in Scotland.

For horses prone to laminitis or on a low-sugar diet, Likit recommends its salt-based Likits or to the Snak-a-Ball, which you can fill with your own suitable feed. It is best to discuss the feeding of a laminitis-prone horse with your vet.

Which Likit flavour do horses like best?

Apple is currently considered the favourite according to Likit, although this varies from country to country: in Germany banana is particularly popular, in Great Britain cherry. There is no hard and fast rule, many horses simply have their own preference.

Alongside the fruit flavours there is Likit Granola, a long-lasting lick with grains such as maize, wheat, barley and oats worked in. According to the manufacturer it also fits into the Likit Holder or the Boredom Breaker.
