Likit at Ahrens Reitsport
Likit is a family business from Ayrshire in Scotland, founded in 2002. The brand produces treats and toys for horses that are intended to reduce boredom in the stable. Production takes place in the company’s own factory in Scotland and the recipe was developed together with equine nutritionist Dr Derek Cuddeford. Every batch receives its own number for traceability.
At Ahrens Reitsport you will find Likit licks in flavours such as apple, banana, carrot and pineapple, small Likits, Granola treats and toys such as the Boredom Breaker.
What are Likit licks intended for?
Likit licks are intended to provide horses in the stable with something to do and to reduce boredom. The manufacturer points out that horses naturally graze for many hours a day and often have fewer opportunities to do so when stabled or during transport.
The Likits are inserted into holders or toys that the horse can lick and nibble. Likit uses a level system to indicate how challenging a toy is for the horse.
How much Likit can my horse have per day?
Likit recommends a maximum of 300 g of Likit per day. The main ingredient is glucose and, according to the manufacturer, the amount corresponds to the sugar from about two hours of grazing.
For horses prone to laminitis or on a low-sugar diet, Likit offers salt-based varieties. For such horses, please discuss feeding with your vet beforehand. We are also happy to advise you as part of our feed and care advice.
How do I start with Likit if my horse does not know it yet?
For getting started, Likit recommends the Likit Holder because it is the most economical way to introduce your horse to the products. Alternatively, you can first offer a small Likit or a treat bar from your hand.
According to the manufacturer, apple is the most popular flavour in many countries, while in Germany banana is ahead. If your horse already knows Likits, you can later move on to more challenging toys such as the Boredom Breaker.
