Mattes Girths

That depends on the girth position and the conformation of your horse. The anatomical girth is intended for horses with a well-defined girth groove that is far enough away from the elbow. The asymmetrical girth is cut back strongly at the front and suits horses where the girth lies close to the elbow or moves forwards.

The moon girth follows the curve of the ribs and is suitable for round horses with a short back and a wide ribcage. According to Mattes, the cross straps and spreaders are intended to prevent creasing. At our shop you can get Mattes sheepskin short girths in anatomical, asymmetrical and moon shapes, each with elastic inserts.

Measure on the fully girthed horse, both sides tightened evenly, from lower edge to lower edge of the saddle flap and subtract 30 cm from this. Always round the result up to the next girth length.

Alternatively, after tightening, measure from the second hole of the girth strap from the bottom to the same hole on the other side. Make sure that the girth buckles lie clearly above the elbow. At our shop Mattes short girths are available in lengths 65, 70 and 75 cm.

Mattes recommends regular machine washing at a maximum of 30 °C, using the Extra Water option and a normal spin cycle. Close the hook-and-loop fastenings beforehand, remove plastic inserts (with removable sheepskin they remain in the base girth) and put the girth into the Mattes washing bag. Wash removable sheepskin separately in the same load.

For detergent Mattes recommends its special detergent MELP, which replenishes the natural oils, because normal detergents can damage wool and leather. Dry the girth at a maximum of 30 °C in the tumble dryer or air-dry it in the shade, never in the sun or on a radiator.
