Mattes at Ahrens Reitsport
Mattes is a sheepskin specialist from Tuttlingen on the Danube. The company was founded on 1 April 1867 as a white tannery and has focused on the equestrian sector since the mid-1980s. Mattes has been buying its raw skins in Australia for almost four decades and selects them rigorously. A typical feature of the products is the distinctive quilting pattern.

Where does the brand Mattes come from?
Mattes is based in Tuttlingen on the Danube and was founded in 1867. At first the company mainly processed sheep and goat leather. Later it added sheepskins for winter boots, car seats and aeroplanes.
Since the mid-1980s Mattes has been developing and producing equestrian products. The range now extends from saddle cloths and saddle cushions to saddle pads, girths, ear bonnets and care products.
How do I wash Mattes sheepskin correctly?
Mattes expressly recommends machine washing at up to 30 °C with the Extra Water option and the special detergent MELP. You should not use other wool detergents, fabric softener or bleach.
Before washing, close hook-and-loop fasteners, remove inserts and wash pads inside out. Then take them out of the machine immediately and dry them cold or at a maximum of 30 °C in the tumble dryer, or alternatively in the shade in the open air, never on a radiator.
Why should I use the detergent MELP for sheepskin?
MELP is tailored to natural, untreated sheepskin. Normal detergents and even wool detergents can damage the wool and leather. Wool detergents are usually intended for wool that has been treated against felting, which is not the case with natural sheepskin.
MELP has a re-oiling effect and contains components that Mattes also uses in the production of the skins. Regular washing removes sebum and ammonia from the horse’s sweat and keeps the sheepskin soft and functional.
