Leistner at Ahrens Reitsport
Leistner stands for horse brushes made by William Leistner GmbH & Co. KG from Schönheide in the Erzgebirge. The family business was founded in 1882 and has specialised in body brushes and grooming brushes for horses in recent decades. It mainly uses horsehair from horses’ tails, pig bristles and other natural fibres, set in backs made from locally sourced beech wood.
At Ahrens Reitsport you will find a wide selection of grooming kit from Leistner: body brushes in different sizes and designs, high-gloss and massage brushes as well as brushes for daily coat care.
Where do Leistner brushes come from?
Leistner brushes are made in Schönheide in the Saxon Erzgebirge. This is where William Leistner GmbH & Co. KG is based, a family business that has been manufacturing brushes since it was founded in 1882.
Today the range includes around 190 different brushes for horses and dogs. The wooden backs are made from locally sourced beech wood and are treated with an eco-friendly water-based varnish.
What is the difference between horsehair, pig bristles and synthetic bristles?
Horsehair and pig bristles are natural fibres, whereas synthetic bristles are man-made and specially crimped. Leistner uses firm horsehair from the tail, whose rough surface picks up dust from the coat. Natural fibres also do not cause static build-up in the coat during grooming.
Horsehair remains permanently springy and returns to its shape after every grooming session. The crimped synthetic bristles in coat brushes such as the Superbrush absorb a lot of dirt and stand back up well after use.
How do I clean a body brush from Leistner?
Knock out the body brush regularly and brush it through with another brush. If it is very dirty, a damp cloth will help. Washing is only necessary once or twice a year.
To do this, put a little horse shampoo in a shallow container with water and immerse only the bristles for 10 to 15 minutes. The wood must not get wet, because it can warp or crack. Then rinse with clean water and leave to dry completely lying on the bristles.
How long does a body brush made from natural hair last?
With good care, a body brush made from natural hair will last for many years. Leistner reports customer feedback that body brushes with horsehair or pig bristles are in use for 10 to more than 20 years.
The prerequisite is that the bristle bundles remain anchored in the solid beech wood and that the wood is not damaged by water. According to the manufacturer, damage to the wood caused by contact with water is excluded from the warranty.
