Sprenger Spurs

The length mainly depends on the length of your leg and the distance to the horse’s belly. According to Sprenger, riders with short legs usually manage with shorter spurs, while longer legs are better suited to longer spurs, which help keep the lower leg still. The most commonly chosen shank lengths are between 2 and 3.5 cm.

Sprenger recommends short, rounded or ball-shaped spurs for beginners. For competitions there are specific rules on spur length and on spurs with rowels, which you should check in the regulations for the relevant class in advance.

Spurs in the Ultra Fit range can be adjusted to your foot by bending them, while the unbreakable material remains stable. The Extra Grip models also have a rubber coating that protects the leather of your riding boots and helps to prevent the spur from slipping.

Sprenger also highlights the Balkenhol loop, which allows the spur strap to sit on the foot without uncomfortable pressure. The spurs are made from stainless steel, and in the Black Series the Extra Grip versions are also available in blackened stainless steel.

There is no simple general answer, because some horses react more strongly to a flat shank than to a rowel. In principle, spurs with a flat neck end have a stronger effect according to Sprenger than rounded ball spurs. For rowel spurs the following applies: the thicker and rounder the wheel, the softer the effect, and a toothed wheel has a more pinpointed effect than a smooth ball wheel.

Keep the wheel free from hair and dirt, especially during coat change, so that it can turn. For sensitive or clipped horses Sprenger recommends softer spurs or a wide wheel.

Sprenger offers spur straps in a length of 45 cm made from leather, Perlon and BioThane, with buckles in silver, anthracite or black. In our range you will find leather straps in brown and black, Perlon straps in brown and black and BioThane straps in black, grey and pink.
