Sprenger at Ahrens Reitsport
Sprenger (Herm. Sprenger) is a family business from Iserlohn in the Sauerland. Hermann Sprenger founded it in 1872, initially selling spurs. Today the company is already run by the fourth generation, and in addition to equestrian products it also manufactures products for dog sports and boating. According to the company, production still takes place at the Iserlohn site.
At Ahrens Reitsport you will find bits from Sprenger such as loose ring snaffles, bradoons, curb bits and mullen mouth bits, as well as stirrups, spurs and spur straps. With Sprenger trial bits you can test different models on your own horse as part of our bit fitting.
Where does Sprenger come from and since when has the company existed?
Sprenger is based in Iserlohn and has been in existence since 1872. At that time Hermann Sprenger founded a business for spurs and fittings for horse and driving harness. After two moves within the city the company is still located in Alexanderstraße today.
Later, boat fittings and products for dog sport were added. The Herm. Sprenger Metallwarenfabrik is now run as a family business in the fourth generation.
What is the difference between Sensogan and Aurigan?
Sensogan was developed from Aurigan and has now replaced this material at Sprenger. Both are copper alloys that were developed specifically for bits and toxicologically examined by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover.
The difference lies in the hardening: instead of aluminium, Sensogan is hardened with manganese. According to Sprenger, this preserves the natural oxidisation of the copper. Stainless steel on the other hand is neutral in taste and very strong.
What bit size does my horse need?
You can recognise the correct size by how the bit lies at the corners of the mouth when the mouthpiece is pulled straight. On a loose ring snaffle the rings should move freely and have at most about half a centimetre of space on each side. Eggbutt and D-ring bits, on the other hand, lie close to the corners and are usually one size smaller.
Sprenger offers a printable bit width gauge for this purpose. Even easier is our bit fitting with trial bits, either in our shop or at your yard.
Single-jointed or double-jointed: how do the Sprenger bits differ?
Single-jointed and double-jointed bits distribute pressure differently on the tongue. With a single-jointed bit the joint stands up slightly when you take a contact, and the pressure goes more onto the sides of the tongue. Double-jointed bits have a centre piece and distribute the pressure over a larger area.
On the single-jointed Turnado bits the joint is rotated 45 degrees forwards. The best way to find out which design suits your horse is a bit fitting.
