Hepp at Ahrens Reitsport

At our shop, Hepp stands for studs and stud accessories for shod horses. Studs are screwed into prepared stud holes in the horseshoe and give the horse more grip on slippery ground, for example across country or on grass arenas.

At Ahrens Reitsport you will find various stud shapes from Hepp in sets, including multi-purpose, grass and cone studs, each with 3/8-inch or M12 thread, as well as a small stud case for M12 studs. We are happy to advise you on choosing the right studs in our shop in Tangstedt.

What does my horse need studs for?

Studs give your horse more grip on smooth or slippery ground and help prevent it from slipping. This is why they are often used for cross-country and for show jumping on grass.

To do this, the farrier shoes the horse with horseshoes that have stud holes. Screw-in studs are put in before riding and removed again afterwards. If they are left in the shoe, the horse can injure itself or others in the stable or in the paddock.

Which thread do I need, M12 or 3/8 inch?

The thread has to match the stud holes in your horse’s shoes, so it is either M12 or 3/8 inch. The two sizes are not compatible with each other.

If you are unsure, ask your farrier which thread he used when shoeing your horse. From Hepp we stock studs in both versions, so when buying, pay attention to the specification in the product name. The small stud case is designed for M12 studs.

Which studs do I use on which ground?

The right stud shape depends on the ground and on the discipline. In the German Equestrian Federation (FN) training film series on safe cross-country riding, Julia Krajewski recommends using slightly shorter studs in front than behind and choosing slightly pointier shapes on harder ground.

Grass studs are, as the name suggests, intended for grass, multi-purpose studs for different conditions, and cone studs have a tapered shape. Ask your farrier or trainer for advice when choosing.
