Sprenger Bit Accessories

You start wrapping the bandage around the mouthpiece from the outside with light tension, each layer overlapping the previous one by about half. According to Sprenger this creates an even, stable layer that softly pads the bit. As soon as the bandage shows the first signs of wear, simply replace it.

The SoftBit is made entirely of latex and fits every bit. One pack contains two rolls, each 3.8 x 70 cm. For the apple-flavoured version Sprenger states that it works best in the first two weeks after opening. After that you should store the remainder wrapped well in film in a cool, dry place. We stock the box with two rolls and the apple-flavoured bandage.

A latex bandage pads the mouthpiece and can help horses with a sensitive mouth to accept the bit better. According to Sprenger the soft material reduces friction and pressure points and moulds itself to any bit shape. The apple-flavoured version is intended to improve acceptance even further.

However, a bandage is no substitute for a correctly fitted bit in the right width. If your horse shows problems in the mouth, you should have the cause investigated by a vet. To help you choose a bit, we offer bit fitting with Julia Lühr in our shop in Tangstedt or at your yard, using Sprenger test bits.

The curb chain is attached to the curb chain hooks on the upper cheek of the curb bit. The links must be turned so that they lie flat on the lower jaw. It limits the poll pressure. According to Sprenger it should engage when the lower shank and the corners of the mouth form an angle of about 30 to 45 degrees.

Because the curb groove is covered only by thin skin, Sprenger recommends padding the curb chain when using a pelham. For this there are curb chain guards made of black rubber or leather. We stock the riding curb chain with 24 links, curb chain hooks and both guards.

Sprenger offers the riding curb chain with 24 or 28 links, which corresponds to about 21 to 25 cm depending on the material. In HS stainless steel it measures 23 cm with 24 links and 25 cm with 28 links. In Aurigan with stainless steel sides it is 21 cm long with 24 links and 25 cm with 28 links. In Argentan it is available with 28 links.

To match, Sprenger manufactures curb chain hooks for riding curb bits for right and left, as well as flat stainless steel hooks in pairs. We stock the riding curb chain with 24 links. We will be happy to discuss in our shop in Tangstedt which version fits your curb bit.
