When does my horse need brushing boots?
Brushing boots are particularly useful for show jumping, cross-country, lunging and for young horses. High-quality brushing boots, such as those used in eventing, can also protect the tendons from blows.
For everyday work the basic rule applies: as much as necessary, as little as possible. At competitions you need to remember that leg protection is not permitted in dressage tests under the German competition rules (LPO).
Can brushing boots cause tendon overheating?
Yes, legs can become very warm under brushing boots and bandages. In a study by Middle Tennessee State University, covered legs reached temperatures after only 15 minutes that can damage cells, and only cooled down again after the boots or bandages were removed.
This affected neoprene, perforated and breathable models as well as fleece bandages. You should therefore remove leg protection immediately after training and not leave it on the leg in the stable.
What is the difference between brushing boots and fetlock boots?
Brushing boots protect the entire cannon bone and, depending on the model, the tendons. Fetlock boots are smaller and provide targeted protection for the fetlock. They are mainly worn on the hindlegs when a horse knocks into itself while moving.
Brushing boots are available in leather, plastic or neoprene with foam padding. Which type is suitable depends on the discipline and your horse’s movement.
What do I need to consider when putting brushing boots on?
Only put brushing boots on clean, dry legs and make sure that no sand or dirt gets underneath. Even small foreign bodies cause rubs when you ride.
Leg protection that is fitted too tightly can cause pressure damage. If it is worn permanently it also impedes lymph flow and can impair the leg’s recovery after work.
