What size half chaps do I need?
To find the right size of half chaps you need two measurements: the length from the ankle to just below the back of the knee and the circumference at the widest part of the calf. You then use these values to choose the size from the chart for the relevant model.
Take your measurements wearing the riding breeches and socks that you will wear later, and at the time of day when you usually ride, because calves are often slimmer in the morning. Leather half chaps may feel tight at first because they will give with wear. This also applies to children. In our shop in Tangstedt you can try on half chaps or have them made to measure.

Which measurements do I need for half chaps?
For half chaps you need two measurements: the length of the lower leg and the width of the calf. Compare both values with the size chart for the model, because the charts differ from one manufacturer to another.
What do I need to consider before measuring?
Measure in the same clothing that you ride in and at the time of day when you are usually in the saddle. Chaps manufacturer Kavalkade points out that for most people the calf is slimmer in the morning than in the evening.
- Put on the riding breeches that you will later wear under the half chaps.
- Wear riding socks or knee-high socks if you also use these when riding.
- Use a flexible tape measure and do not pull it too tight.
How do I measure the length for half chaps?
Measure the length on the outside of the leg from the clearly palpable ankle up to the level of the back of the knee, that is up to the lower edge of the kneecap. Bend the knee slightly so that it is easier to find the spot.
How do I measure the calf width for half chaps?
Measure the calf width around the widest part of the calf. Bend the knee as if you were sitting in the saddle. The tape measure should lie against the leg without cutting in.
| Measurement | From | To | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | Outer ankle | Level of the back of the knee or lower edge of the kneecap | Knee slightly bent |
| Width | Widest part of the calf | Once all the way round | Knee bent as in the saddle |
Does the discipline affect the length?
Yes, in a dressage saddle the leg is more stretched than in show jumping. Kavalkade therefore recommends that dressage riders choose a length that is slightly above the measured value.
How tight can new half chaps be?
New leather half chaps can sit tightly because leather gives with wear. The firmer the leather, the less it stretches. Even well-fitting half chaps will drop slightly over time and form small creases at the ankle, which is normal.
If the half chaps are too big right from the start, they will slip down, twist and form too many folds. The top edge can then bother you when riding. Do not hesitate to ask someone to help you the first time you put them on, this is normal with well-fitting half chaps.
Why are well-fitting half chaps so important?
Half chaps support the lower leg and protect the skin from chafing. Socks alone do not give any support and can lead to pressure and chafe marks, warns the German Equestrian Federation (FN). For competitions, half chaps with paddock boots must look like riding boots.
Does this also apply to children’s half chaps?
Yes, you measure children in the same way. Check the fit regularly because length and calf width change as they grow. If no standard size fits, we will take measurements for made-to-measure half chaps in Tangstedt.
