Bucas Turnout Rugs

You measure from the middle of the chest over the shoulder and then straight back to the end of the hindquarters. You then choose the rug size that comes closest to your measurement. Bucas gives rug sizes in centimetres, depending on the model roughly from 85 to 170.

In addition to the size, Bucas says the temperature range in which the rug is to be worn is crucial. For a broad shoulder, for example with Friesians or stallions, Bucas recommends the Big Neck cuts.

The gram number indicates the amount of warming fill. The higher it is, the warmer the rug. For example, with the Freedom Turnout Bucas refers to the version with no fill as Light, 150 g as Medium and 300 g as Extra. The Irish Turnout is available from 0 g to 300 g, the Atlantic Turnout up to 400 g.

Bucas emphasises that the suitable temperature range depends on many factors: whether the horse is clipped, and on sun, humidity, wind and movement. The temperature specifications from the manufacturer are therefore only a guideline, which you should adapt to your horse.

The Irish Turnout has a 1200D ripstop outer material and a silky Dermo-care lining. Smartex, Power and Atlantic have an outer made from ballistic nylon with 1680D and are therefore particularly hard-wearing. According to Bucas they are all waterproof with a hydrostatic head of over 5000 mm and breathable.

Smartex and Power Turnout have the Stay-dry lining, with the Power Turnout also featuring a heat-reflective aluminium inner coating and a silver, sun-reflective outer material. Like the Irish, the Atlantic Turnout uses Dermo-care lining.

Turnout rugs with Stay-dry lining, in other words Smartex and Power Turnout, can be put on the wet horse like a cooler rug according to Bucas. The moisture is transported outwards, the horse dries quickly and the lining on the coat stays dry.

This is practical after riding or washing because you do not then need to change the rug. In our range you will find, for example, the Smartex Rain with Stay-dry fleece, the Smartex Medium with 150 g and the Power Turnout Extra with 300 g fill for this purpose.

Do not wash Bucas rugs at more than 30 °C, otherwise the function can be impaired. Beforehand close all hook-and-loop fastenings and clip the cross surcingle straps together so nothing can get caught in the drum. Bucas recommends its own Bucas Rug Wash for this.

You should reproof waterproof rugs after washing. According to Bucas, small tears can be repaired with the repair kit. With rugs from the Power, Smartex or Atlantic ranges you can extend the warranty from two to three years if you register the rug within 30 days.
