Bucas at Ahrens Reitsport
Bucas is an Irish manufacturer of horse rugs based in Cork, where the company has been operating since 1981. Bucas develops and produces rugs and other accessories for horses. Just one year after starting out, a water-repellent turnout rug was launched, and at the end of the 1980s waterproof and breathable rugs followed. Since 2017 Bucas has been part of the Kerbl group.

Where does the brand Bucas come from?
Bucas comes from Ireland and is based in Cork, where the company has been operating since 1981. The rugs are designed and further developed there.
According to the Kerbl group, which Bucas has been part of since 2017, the company brought a water-repellent turnout rug onto the market just one year after it was founded. At the end of the 1980s, fully waterproof, breathable rugs were added.
What does Stay-Dry mean for Bucas rugs?
Stay-Dry is the lining used in many Bucas rugs that wicks moisture away from the coat to the outside. According to the manufacturer you may, for example, put a rug from the Smartex range on a wet horse after riding or washing.
The lining absorbs the moisture and remains dry on the skin side. This means that the rug also takes over part of the job of a cooler rug. A fleece lining with Stay-Dry is used in the Smartex models, for example.
What fill weight do I need for a Bucas turnout rug?
The weight of the fill depends on the weather, your horse’s coat and how it is kept. Bucas offers the Smartex range in three levels: Rain with no fill, Medium with 150 g and Extra with 300 g.
The outer material is a robust 1680 denier nylon, and according to the catalogue the hydrostatic head is over 5,000 mm. A clipped horse usually needs more warmth than one with a thick winter coat. If you are unsure, we are happy to advise you in our shop in Tangstedt.
Are there Bucas rugs for broad horses?
Yes, for broad horses Bucas offers the Big Neck versions. According to the manufacturer they are intended for stallions and breeds that are broader over the shoulder, such as Friesians, Andalusians or draught horses.
Depending on the model, the sizes range from 85 to 170 cm. Measure your horse before you buy and compare the measurement with the size of your previous rug that fitted well.
