Horseware at Ahrens Reitsport

Horseware Ireland was founded in Dundalk in 1985 by Tom and Carol MacGuinness. Their aim was a horse rug that does not slip, does not get soaked through and does not make the horse sweat. This led to the Rambo Original, which is still made in the same Irish town today. Alongside Rambo, the range includes other rug lines such as Amigo.

At Ahrens Reitsport you will find mainly rugs from Horseware: turnout rugs, stable rugs, cooler rugs and fly rugs from the Rambo and Amigo ranges. Bridles and accessories are also available.

Where does Horseware come from?

Horseware comes from Ireland and was founded in Dundalk in 1985. Tom and Carol MacGuinness started there with a small team and sewed the first prototype of the Rambo rug by hand after months of development.

According to the company, the Rambo range is still produced in Dundalk under the supervision of the founder. Today Horseware has expanded beyond rugs to include leather goods and clothing for riders.

What is the difference between Rambo and Amigo?

The most important difference is in the outer material: Rambo is the more robust range, Amigo the lighter one. The Rambo Original is made from 1000 denier ballistic nylon, while Amigo rugs have an outer shell made of polyester with a weatherproof coating.

The Amigo Bravo 12 Plus, for example, is made from 1200 denier polyester and is waterproof and breathable. Which range is suitable depends on how hard your horse is on its rug in the field.

What do the gram figures and the liner mean on Horseware rugs?

The gram figure indicates the fill of the rug, from 0 g with no fill through 100 g and 200 g up to heavy rugs with 400 g. The higher the value, the warmer the rug.

Some models, such as the Rambo Summer Series, come with a removable liner. It is clipped in and can be removed again depending on the weather. The Disc front closure at the front also saves weight in the shoulder and chest area.

How do I wash a Horseware rug correctly?

Horseware recommends washing rugs at 30 degrees and with a non-biological detergent or a special rug wash. Coarse dirt should first be brushed off and rinsed off, but not with a pressure washer.

Afterwards let the rug drip-dry in the open air, away from radiators and other sources of heat. Once the waterproof guarantee has expired, reproofing with a spray or by a specialist company can be a good idea.
