Kentucky Horsewear at Ahrens Reitsport
Kentucky Horsewear is a Belgian brand that was built up by Thomas Tuytens after several years in China. His first product was leg protection for horses, developed in partnership with Kentucky Reitmode. By 2011 the range already comprised six items. Today Tuytens and product manager Claudia Weber test new developments with their own horses.
At Ahrens Reitsport we stock Kentucky stable rugs, turnout rugs, cooler rugs and exercise sheets, saddle pads, fly veils and fly masks, headcollars and lead ropes, bandages with pads, grazing muzzles, stable equipment and socks, among other things.
Where does the brand Kentucky Horsewear come from?
Kentucky Horsewear comes from Belgium. Founder Thomas Tuytens returned from three years in the family business in China and was looking for a small, non-seasonal product for horses. The first result was leg protection.
Instead of building up a completely new brand, he entered into a partnership with Kentucky Reitmode. At the beginning the goods were stored in a small warehouse in Ronse. Today Kentucky is used internationally by competition and leisure riders.
Does Kentucky use real leather or fur?
No, according to its own information Kentucky Horsewear does not use animal materials. Instead, the brand relies on vegan leather, vegan sheepskin and a vegan rabbit fur.
The vegan rabbit fur is mainly used as a lining in rugs. It is very soft, is intended to prevent chafing on the shoulder and to form small air pockets that retain warmth. The faux fur headcollars and travel headcollars that we stock from Kentucky also follow this principle.
How does Kentucky test its products?
Kentucky tests new products in its own yard for safety, comfort, durability and ease of use. Thomas Tuytens and Claudia Weber, who previously worked as a groom in international sport, ride themselves and try out developments on their own horses.
Suggestions from riders and grooms are incorporated into improvements. According to the brand, the designers ensure that function comes before form.
