The regular Christ protectors are made entirely of sheepskin, the competition protectors only have sheepskin on the inside. You pull the noseband or headpiece protector over the strap and close it with the hook-and-loop fastening along the long side. According to Werner Christ the wool pile is about 30 mm high.

On the competition protectors the sheepskin is only on the inside. On the outside a quilted fabric reinforces the protector and helps it keep its shape, and it is fastened with strong hook-and-loop straps. Here the wool pile is lower at around 20 mm. Both versions are intended to reduce pressure and rubbing points and to absorb excess moisture.

The Christ protectors are cut to fit the respective straps: noseband protectors measure 28 cm, headpiece protectors 32 cm and the cheekpiece covers 11 cm, which are supplied as a pair. Werner Christ offers the curb chain protector in 5 x 14 cm and 7 x 14 cm. It is fastened to the curb strap or curb chain with hook-and-loop straps.

We stock the protectors, depending on the model, in natural, white, brown and black, as well as the competition versions in combinations such as black-natural, brown-natural or black-anthracite. You are welcome to bring your bridle to our shop in Tangstedt so that we can check the fit directly on the strap.

Christ sheepskin protectors can go in the washing machine on the wool cycle at a maximum of 30 °C. Werner Christ advises not to overload the machine, not to use a high spin speed and to close hook-and-loop straps beforehand. A special sheepskin detergent is important, because normal detergents for fabrics or wool are not suitable according to the manufacturer.

Dry them in the tumble dryer at up to 40 °C or in the air in the shade, never in direct sun or on a radiator, because the leather can otherwise become brittle. While drying, pull the protector back into shape again and again and afterwards brush up the wool with a sheepskin brush.

According to its own information Werner Christ sources its skins from the south of Chile, from Argentina and from Australia, where the animals live outdoors all year round. This makes the fleece dense and long. For the equestrian products it is usually shorn so that it provides even padding.

The slightly yellowish colour tone is created by a medical tanning process in the company’s own tannery. In addition to the tanning agent Regulan a vegetable tanning agent from the tara fruit is also used. According to the manufacturer sheepskin is breathable and regulates temperature, which makes it an interesting option for sensitive areas of skin on the horse’s head.
