What is the difference between a Waldhausen fly rug and a sweet itch rug?

A fly rug made of fine mesh fabric protects the body from insects, while a sweet itch rug covers the body as completely as possible. The Waldhausen Sweet Itch Rug Premium, for example, has a fixed neck cover, a wide belly flap and elastic inserts at the shoulder and base of the neck.

The Protect sweet itch fly rug combines both: the neck and shoulder areas are made from elastic, breathable technical fabric, the body from fine mesh with belly flap and tail flap. If your horse suffers from sweet itch, please coordinate the treatment with your vet.

Why does the Waldhausen fly rug have a zebra pattern?

According to Waldhausen, the black and white colour effect repels insects and is intended to protect the horse better than a plain rug. The Zebra fly rug is made from fine mesh polyester with belly and tail flap, double front fastening, shoulder gussets, fillet string and leg straps.

For the neck, ears and eyes, the manufacturer recommends combining it with a neck cover and fly mask. We also offer the fly rug with neck in zebra design, which covers the neck as well.

Does the Waldhausen Protect Rain Fly Rug also keep out rain?

The Protect Rain Fly Rug has a water-repellent insert in the back area, while the rest is made from fine mesh fly fabric. It therefore protects the back in light rain, but is not a waterproof rain sheet.

It is held in place by cross surcingles, a triplex front fastening and a fillet string. Rings on the rug are used to attach the matching neck cover, which Waldhausen offers separately. The material is 100% polyester.

How do I wash a fly rug from Waldhausen?

First read the care label, because it specifies whether hand washing or machine washing is suitable. Waldhausen advises checking the rug for holes beforehand and repairing them, brushing out coarse dirt and hair and securing the fastenings so that they do not get caught in the drum.

Do not use fabric softener because it can coat the fibres. After washing, hang the rug up smoothly to dry, as a tumble dryer can damage the material and its function. Only fold it once it is completely dry so that no mould can form.
