Which Sprenger Bits are available at Ahrens Reitsport?
We currently stock 74 items from Sprenger in the Bits category priced from €4.95 to €259.90. Colours include black. Depending on the model, they are available in sizes 12,5, 13,5, 11,5, 14,5, 12, 13, 14 and 10,5.
Can I see Sprenger Bits in person in Tangstedt near Hamburg?
Yes, according to our current stock, all 74 items are available in our shop at Dorfring 2 in Tangstedt. There you can compare models and get advice, or you can order online with shipping or pick-up in store.
Which bit width and thickness do I need with Sprenger?
The easiest way to find the correct width is with the bit width gauge that Sprenger provides for printing, or with a trial bit buckled into the bridle. For a loose ring snaffle there should be about 3 to 5 mm space on each side between the ring and the corners of the mouth. Bits with fixed cheeks such as eggbutt or D-ring, on the other hand, must lie close to the corners of the mouth and are therefore usually chosen one size smaller.
For the thickness Sprenger recommends the two-finger test: if you can feel pressure at the bit position on two fingers placed one on top of the other while the incisors are closed, the mouthpiece should be no more than 16 mm thick.

What is the difference between single and double jointed Sprenger bits?
A double jointed bit has two shorter arms with a central piece and distributes the pressure over a larger area on the tongue than a single jointed one. In a single jointed bit the joint stands up slightly when rein pressure is applied and directs the pressure more strongly onto the sides of the tongue.
With Dynamic RS and Turnado the joint is angled 45 degrees forwards so that both arms lie evenly on the tongue. Conventional single jointed bits have arms of unequal length for manufacturing reasons and, according to Sprenger, should be rotated regularly. On KK Ultra the central piece is angled 45 degrees. We stock Dynamic RS in single and double jointed versions, as well as Turnado, KK Ultra and novocontact.

How can I recognise a Sprenger bit made of Sensogan, and what is the arrow for?
You can recognise Sensogan bits by the black rings in the side parts of the mouthpiece and the stamped wording SENSOGAN. Anatomically shaped models also have a small arrow. When the bit is buckled correctly the arrow on the left side of the horse points forwards.
Sensogan is a nickel-free alloy of copper, manganese and zinc that Sprenger processes in Iserlohn as a further development of Aurigan. It is intended to encourage chewing activity and warms up quickly in the mouth. According to the manufacturer, not every gold-coloured bit has these properties, because many copper alloys are hardened with aluminium and no longer oxidise.

Can I try Sprenger bits before buying?
Yes, Ahrens Reitsport is a Sprenger Test Centre and during our bit fitting you can try Sprenger test bits on your own horse. The fitting is carried out by Julia Lühr, a dressage rider up to S*** level who works closely with Sprenger, either in our shop in Tangstedt or at your yard.
According to Sprenger a correctly fitting bit is shown by a horse that confidently seeks the contact and chews contentedly. Corners of the mouth, palate and tongue should remain free from injuries, pressure points and redness. In the event of injuries in the mouth please consult your vet.
