STÜBBEN at Ahrens Reitsport
STÜBBEN is a saddlery from the Lower Rhine. Johannes Stübben founded it on 15 March 1894 in Krefeld, and after the business premises were destroyed in the Second World War, Werner Stübben rebuilt the company. Today Joh's Stübben GmbH & Co. KG is based in Kempen. According to the company its saddles are made in Germany, and the range also includes bridles, reins, stirrup leathers, saddle pads and girths.
At Ahrens Reitsport you will find STÜBBEN in the girths section, including leather girths with elastic inserts and the Equi-Soft® girth with interchangeable pads made of leather, neoprene or sheepskin.
Where does the brand STÜBBEN come from?
STÜBBEN comes from Krefeld on the Lower Rhine. Johannes Stübben opened a saddlery there on the Ostwall in 1894, which was workshop, shop and home all in one. In 1943 the building was destroyed in a bombing raid. By 1948 Werner Stübben had made a fresh start.
In the 1950s the company built up worldwide distribution. Today the firm is based in Kempen and according to its own information the saddles are made in Germany in over one hundred individual steps.
How is the Equi-Soft girth from STÜBBEN constructed?
The Equi-Soft® girth is made of leather, stainless steel buckles and elastic rings that expand with the horse’s breathing. It is always used together with an interchangeable, separately available pad that is attached with hook-and-loop fastening.
For girths from 40 to 45 cm there is the small pad size, for 50 to 150 cm the large one. You can choose between vachette leather, neoprene and sheepskin pads. There is also a stud guard version.
What girth length do I need and how do I fit the Equi-Soft girth correctly?
If your current girth fits well, choose the same length. Measurement is taken from buckle end to buckle end. When girthed, the buckles should be positioned as high as possible on the ribcage and the centre of the girth should lie centrally on the girth area.
Tighten both sides evenly so that the girth sits securely, but the elastic rings are only slightly stretched and still have room to move. Girthing too tightly cancels out the function. Check the fit while riding and, if necessary, tighten the girth again.
How do I care for a STÜBBEN leather girth?
First brush off coarse dirt and dust with a soft brush. Then wipe the leather with a damp cloth and mild saddle soap. With the Equi-Soft® girth, lift the elastic rings slightly so that you can clean underneath them as well.
Afterwards apply a suitable leather care product so that the leather remains soft and durable. Wipe the buckles with a damp cloth and dry them thoroughly so that neither rust nor residues can form.
